Chemical blast prompts evacuations in Midtown

Monday, December 17, 2007

Several floors of a midtown Manhattan office building had to be evacuated Monday morning because of a chemical explosion.

It happened at the News Corp building at 48th Street and Sixth Avenue.

Authorities say a chemical reaction created the explosion on the 45th floor. That floor houses the building's heating and cooling systems.

Scores of people from the 43rd, 44th and 45th floors were evacuated from the high-rise, part of the Rockefeller Center complex, as a precaution. Workers were warned not to take the elevators.

One person suffered minor injuries, said to be lacerations to the head.

The New York Post and Fox News are housed in the building but their operations were not disrupted.
