Deadly hit and run in Brooklyn

Saturday, December 29, 2007

A bold good samaritan catches a man believed to be responsible for a deadly hit and run accident, bringing him to police.

Eyewitness News reporter Patricia Wu has the story from the scene of the accident in Sunset Park.

The suspect now has a list of charges before him.

Lawrence Myers, 38-year-old, of Brookyn is accused of hitting and killing an elderly man, driving off, and then slamming into several cars before coming to a stop.

"I just saw something fling up and came down and when I saw that I said, "Oh my god!"" said witness Stephanie Morales. "He was on the floor trying to get up."

It happened just after 3:30 Friday afternoon at 52nd Street and 4th Avenue in the Sunset Park neighborhood.

Francisco Guerrero, 73-year-old, was hit while crossing the street. He was rushed to Lutheran Hospital where he later died.

Witnesses say when Myers blue minivan came to a stop, he got out and ran off.

A good samaritan at a nearby barber shop sprang into action. He chased Myers down and caught him.

"This guy from the barbershop bring him to the scene and told that he killed the guy," said witness Stephanie Morales.

Witnesses say Myers denied having any involvement in the crash.

The good samaritan did not want to talk about his heroic actions, but witnesses say they are glad someone will be held responsible for Mr. Guerrero's death.

"This guy's a good guy, some people they don't do that," said witness Stephanie Morales. "This guy's a good guy."

Myers is now facing several charges including leaving the scene and driving without the license.
