Fatal crash involving Port Authority Police officer

ELIZABETH (WABC) -- A woman is dead and a Port Authority Police officer is seriously hurt after a crash Tuesday afternoon in Elizabeth.

The two vechicle accident happened just after noon on New Year's Day on North Avenue near Ikea Drive in the Port Elizabeth section.

Authorities say officer Donald Scala had to be extricated from his police vehicle. He was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was being treated for serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Scala is assigned to the department's K-9 unit. His dog was in the police vehicle at the time of the accident, and was sent to a veterinarian's office for evaluation.
