Pit bulls found in Yonkers dumpster

YONKERS (WABC) -- Two pit bulls, one dead and the other dying, were found in a dumpster in Yonkers Sunday morning. They are apparently victims of dog fighting.

"It looked like they were used as bait," Yonkers Police Captain Joseph Barca said.

Detectives and Westchester County SPCA officials were looking for who threw the animals in the garbage of the BP gas station at 102 Yonkers Avenue.

Employees of the service station were putting garbage in the bin when they spotted the animals around 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Barca said.

"They were left for dead," Barca said.

The pit bull dogs, both males, are believed to be between 3 and 5 years old.

Authorities say one of the dogs was badly injured with multiple fresh puncture wounds and suffering from major blood loss and extreme exposure.

The other dog was dead and in rigamortis state.

The live dog was transported to emergency veterinary care by Yonkers Animal Shelter.

The dog was beaten so badly, officials say, he can't even walk right now.

Sadly, the person or people who threw the dogs into the ring, then the dumpster, may get away with it. Officials say there is no real trail of evidence with an animal, just a sickening picture of dogfighting to start 2008.
