Teens driving to school in horrific collision

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

A Ford Mustang taking three teens to Roxbury High School collided with another car in Mount Arlington this morning -- tossing one of them onto the windy roadway.

Newscopter-7 was live over the scene.

The driver, a teen boy, reportedly crashed his Mustang into another car on Howard Boulevard between Interstate 80 and Route 46 just after 7 a.m.

Eyewitness News is told the force of the collision sent his backseat passenger, a girl, hurtling out of the car. She was thrown 20 feet onto the roadway.

The Mustang slid off Howard Boulevard and down an embankment.

All three teens -- two girls and the driver, who all live in Mount Arlington -- were rushed to Morristown Memorial Hospital. Two were taken by helicopter.

Officials say the girl who was thrown from the car was listed in critical condition with a lacerated liver. The driver and other girl had less serious injuries.

The driver of the other car also sustained injuries.

According to reports the teens were driving to Roxbury High School, where they are all students. Two of the teens are siblings.

District officials put their crisis plan into effect, and were planning to inform students at the high school.

Howard Boulevard was closed in both directions, between Interstate 80 and Route 46, for the investigation. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Speed did not appear to be a factor.
