Jersey City mailmen busted in drug raid

Friday, January 25, 2008

Two Jersey City mailmen, in uniform, were arrested on drug charges Friday.

Two Jersey City mailmen were arrested Friday in a raid that ended a three-week investigation into reports a letter carrier was dealing drugs while making rounds, officials said.

The two men, in uniform, were taken into custody with third man, and 4 1/2 ounces of marijuana were seized.

Authorities say police raided the apartment of 47-year-old Hector Pacheco Sr., of Baldwin Avenue off Montgomery Street, at about 3:30 and found the letter carrier grinding marijuana while wearing his uniform.

Pacheco was charged with multiple drug counts, including possession of marijuana with intent to distribute near public property, according to authorities.

Police say Letter carrier Al Spencer, 37, of Clerk Street, was also in uniform in the apartment. He was charged with drug possession after being found smoking a "blunt," or marijuana cigar.

Finally, Hector Pacheco Jr., 26, of Clerk Street, was charged with drug possession after being found with a ziplock bag of marijuana, officials said.

The pot found in the apartment was reportedly broken down into 42 $20 bags for street sale. Postal officials responded and claimed the undelivered mail from Spencer's bag, Eason said, adding that Pacheco Sr. had finished his route at the time of the raid.

On Wednesday, letter carrier Robert Toth, 40, of Carlton Avenue, was arrested outside the Western Slope Tavern on Nelson Avenue and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and harassment, reports said. He was also charged with drinking in public, officials said.
