Police in the Bronx shot a man they pulled over for a traffic stop Friday.

The incident happened in the Morrisaina section.

Eyewitness News reporter NJ Burkett has the story.

A motorist was shot and wounded by a New York City police officer on Franklin Avenue.

It happened around 2:30, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear.

What we do know is that four shots were fired. The motorist, who did not have a gun, was struck once in one of his fingers. He suffered no other injures, according to the NYPD.

The incident began when two officers on routine patrols spotted the car driving erratically. They say they pulled the vehicle over and at some point opened fire into the driver's side window.

The officer who fired is identified only as a female patrol officer assigned to the 42nd Precinct. Why she opened fire is still not known.

Detectives say several knives were found on the front passenger seat of the car.

The investigation is ongoing.
