Five-alarm fire in the Bronx

Monday, February 04, 2008

A five-alarm has damaged at least 12 stores in the Bronx.

Fire officials says the first call came in at 7:59 a.m. Monday, and the fifth alarm was about an hour and 45 minutes later.

The fire at 2139 White Plains Road quickly spread to nearby stores, injuring two people who were treated at the scene, the fire department said. The cause was not immediately known.

White Plains road is closed to traffic near Lydig Avenue and No. 2 trains that run on the tracks above the street were bypassing stops for a brief period. However train service resumed at 10:28 a.m., said Charles Seaton, an NYC transit spokesman.

The fire department says 45 pieces of equipment and 200 firefighters are on the scene.

A pizza place, a sneaker store, and a florist were all damaged in the fire.
