Woman loses legs in hit and run

Thursday, March 13, 2008

A 91-year-old woman narrowly escaped death after being struck by a semi-truck Thursday. But tragically, she lost both of her legs.

It happened as she was walking to a senior center in the Norwood section of the Bronx.

The woman, identified as Anna Rogovin, was crossing the street hunched over with her cane.

Witnesses who know and love her ran to help.

Police say the driver of the traffic trailer never saw Anna, and still probably doesn't know that he hit her.

It won't change the pain Anna is in. She served in the military as a chemist during WWII.

She lives alone with no family in town, just friends at the senior center.

"I once asked her if she was in pain, and her only answer to me was yes," senior center director Bayla Lovens said. "No complaining, no list of what was going on. She's a stron,g strong woman and hopefully that strength will get her through this too."

Police are searching for the truck that hit her.

Anna is recovering in the hospital and is listed in critical condition.
