Student, fleeing from robbers, hit by car

Friday, April 04, 2008

A college student is in critical condition after he was struck by an SUV while running from thives.

A Columbia University student was critically injured Friday night when he was hit by a car while running away from robbers.

The incident happened at West 120th Street and Broadway in Morningside Heights.

Police say the victim had just left the library and was waiting at the bus stop when he was approached by two men who either mugged him or tried to mug him.

Authorities say it appears the 24-year-old was trying to get away from the suspects when he ran into the street and was struck by an SUV.

He was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital in extremely critical condition, suffering from severe head trauma.

The suspects are described as black males in their late teens. They reportedly fled on foot. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene.

Police are continuing to search for the two men.
