Brutal stabbing in Times Square

Monday, June 23, 2008

A man was stabbed multiple times during what may have been a random act of violence in Times Square Monday morning.

Police say the victim, a 23-year-old Manhattan man, was stabbed multiple times in the chest in front of Bank of America on West 45th Street just before 7:30 a.m.

Authorities say his 37-year-old attacker appears to have walked up to him and suddenly attacked. The victim was rushed to Bellevue Medical Center in critical condition, officials say.

Police say the suspect, wearing a black knapsack, attempted to flee, but was quickly taken into custody. Charges are pending against Antoine Poprilo, a Midtown resident with seven prior drug arrests.

It was not known if it was a random attack.

Detectives have not been able to talk to the victim. They are reviewing surveillance cameras in the area.
