Two NY National Guards were killed after their convoy was attacked in Afghanistan.
ALBANY -- The Defense Department says two members of the New York Army National Guard unit based in Jamestown died from wounds suffered when their convoy was attacked in Afghanistan.
According to the military, the men died June 26 near a forward operating base in Logar Province in eastern Afghanistan. Killed in the attack were Sgt. 1st Class Joseph McKay, 51, of Brooklyn, and Spc. Mark Palmateer, 38, of Poughkeepsie.
They were assigned to 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry of the New York Army National Guard. Their unit was assigned to a command responsible for training the Afghan National Army.
Also killed in the attack was 37-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Hilton of Livonia, Mich., who was assigned to Michigan Army National Guard's 425th Infantry Regiment based in Selfridge.
