Teen killed in fatal LIRR fall

Monday, June 30, 2008

A horrible accident at a Long Island Rail Road station took the life of a teenager who tripped or slipped the platform early Monday.

It was a gruesome scene at the Lynbrook station, where the 19-year-old's body was crushed by an oncoming train.

It happened at around 3:30 a.m. The train was approaching the station at about 30 miles an hour. The engineer said he saw two men walking along the platform when one of them suddenly and without warning fell onto the tracks.

The engineer said he hit the emergency brake and sounded the horn, but it was too late. The teenager was killed instantly. He has been identified as Patrick Gordon, of Rockville Centre.

The circumstances, including where the victim and his friend were headed, if they were impaired in any way and if the platform was slippery from the rain, are not known. Officials are calling the incident a fatal accident.
