Several residents injured in apartment fire

Tuesday, July 01, 2008

A second-alarm fire that tore through an apartment building injured seven residents -- two of them children, and two others forced to jump from windows.

Eyewitness News is told the fire broke out on the second floor of 1001 Ocean Avenue in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn just before 2:30 a.m. this morning.

Seven residents of the same family were injured, all seriously.

Two children -- a seven-year-old boy and a 14-year-old -- reportedly sustained first and second degree burns. They were taken to Maimonides Medical Center in unknown condition.

Also, two adults -- a pregnant woman and a 56-year-old man -- were forced to jump from the second floor windows.

Officials say the fire tore through three apartments, leaving them uninhabitable.

Six firefighters were also injured.

Following the flames, many mothers held their children in the street.
