Gunman open fires in East Village

Thursday, July 24, 2008

Two people were shot, apparently by a rifle-toting gunman, in the East Village Thursday.

Police say the gunman opened fire in front of a bodega near the intersection of East 7th Street and Avenue D just before 8:15 a.m.

Authorities say a 50-year-old man was shot several times, and a bullet went through the window of the bodega and struck an 18-year-old bodega employee.

The victims were rushed to Bellevue Medical Center in stable condition.

The suspect reportedly fled in a blue or green Dodge Caravan, but quickly turned himself into the 7th Precinct on the Lower East Side.

Charges against him are pending.
