QUEENS (WABC) -- An unidentified woman fought back against and escaped a would-be attacker who tried to grab her on a Queens street early Monday morning, according to police.
Detectives from Queens Special Victims Squad were blanketing the neighborhoods where the rapes and attempted rapes have taken place.
Police were hoping reward money will lead them to a suspect who not only sexually assaults young women, but also allegedly photographs his victims during the violent assaults.
He may have attempted to rape twice in the past couple of days. Police said he followed a woman as she got off the bus at the corner of Sutphin Boulavard and Yates Road at 1:00 Monday morning. He dragged her into a yard, but she managed to kick him in the groin area and run for safety.
Early Sunday morning, an 18-year-old woman was followed home from a bus stop near 133rd Avenue and Farmers Boulevard in Laurelton. As she was being groped and restrained, her screams alerted a neighbor who scared the attacker away. Two other times the victims were not as fortunate. No one heard the screams of the woman raped in a backyard near Southgate Avenue on July 10 or in a school playground a day later. A teenager was raped in the July 11th attack.
A 16-year-old girl on her way to summer school in Queens was dragged behind an abandoned building and sexually assaulted by a blade-wielding attacker. Police say the assailant attacked at 8:00 a.m. as the teen walked in St. Albans.
She was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Police said she was not slashed or stabbed during the sexual assault.
Sources said in both cases the suspect snapped photos of what he was doing.
