Emerging artists get local venue

Friday, August 01, 2008

There is a boutique on the Lower East Side that caters to all things local. The clothing and jewelry is all made by area artists. And now, they are helping local musicians through a summer concert series.

Even though celebrities like Lindsey Lohan and Cameron Diaz shop at this boutique, the owners are making sure that the fashion they sell is afordable to us all. And along the way, they are helping to inspire local up-and-coming designers and musicians.

Whether playing in coffee shops or playing in the boutique Lolli by Reincarnation, singer/songwriter Kelsey Butt is one of the emerging young musicians bursting onto the scene.

"My absolute favorite place to play is my living room, with a couple people," Butt said.

Lolli has created what a so-called creative living space, where young local designers can sell their designs and artists can feel at home playing their latest musical creations.

"Music and fashion have always gone together," she said. "It's kind of like rock stars and models."

It's a recreation of culture that is evident on the walls of the boutique.

"Reincarnation is about having vintage pieces that are here in the store that we re-work," Shon McCarthy said.

The name Lolli comes from the idea of lollipops, which come in every color. The boutique makes dresses in more than 80 colors and bags in more than 100 different types of Italian leather.

"The way you can go build a bear, you can build your own bag," McCarthy sayd. "We offer women free tailoring, we offer free messengering to their home or office."

The feature dress at Lolli now is the six-way, which is a dress that can be worn six different ways. The gold and silver jewelry is hand made. Also on display are Michael DiPietro's custom jeans. He's a student at Parson's.

"We don't take any of his profit," McCarthy said. "We don't ask that he sells wholesale to us, to help new designers get started."

The Lolli Summer Music Series kicks off tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the boutique, which is located on Stanton Street between Allen and Orchid streets. There is complimentary wine and, of course, great music. And you can browse the racks, as well.
