Infant remains found inside house

Friday, August 08, 2008

A 21-year-old woman has been arrested after the remains of an infant were found in a closet of a home in Springfield Gardens early this morning.

Shantaivia Johnson told police that she gave birth to the baby in December, in the house on Mathewson Court.

She said the baby was stillborn, according to investigators. She didn't know what to do, police said she claimed, so she put the dead newborn in a spackle bucket, and hid it in a closet.

Early Thursday morning, Johnson's mother called police after she apparently discovered the bucket with the dead baby inside.

Investigators gave the remains to the medical examiner to learn more.

The family was questioned by police at a nearby precinct.

Police charged Johnson with manslaughter on Thursday night.
