NEW YORK (WABC) -- Two women are recovering after they were shot in broad daylight while walking in Manhattan.
The gunshots rang out on West 113th Street and Saint Nicholas Avenue in Harlem Sunday, as the women simply walked down the street.
Officers carefully collected evidence from the scene. Neighbors say shootings are nothing new, but the time of day is, in this incident.
"We've had a couple of shootings in the past few months, but they've all been in the middle of the night," witness Ken Campbell said. "But middle of the day on a Sunday, that's something different."
Witnesses heard six shots outside their apartments. Many didn't know when it was safe to come outside."I sat and I froze," witness Robin Haigler said. "I sat down, and you could count to three. And immediately following, there was another three shots. But the last three shots trailed off as if someone was running."
The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m., just steps from the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood.
Officers and their supervisors roped off the scene, checking every inch for clues. And police talked to witnesses, trying to come up with a suspect.
Neighbors say the ever-changing neighborhood is seeing new development, bringing closer the hope of a soon-to-be-safer neighborhood.
But setbacks like this incident, they say, are hard to take.
"You used to worry about whether the kid was going to get the right thing from the store," another neighbor said. "Now, you gotta worry about whether your children are coming home from the store."
Police say both women suffered graze wounds from bullets. They are recovering at St. Luke's Hospital.
