Monday, September 01, 2008

The News Leader

An off-duty police officer was jumped by a gang of four men while walking to work in Inwood this morning.

Eyewitness News is told the officer, who was in plainclothes, was attacked near the intersection of Ninth Avenue and 207th Street at around 6:20 a.m.

The four men allegedly threw him to the ground, physically assaulted and robbed him.

The suspects then fled the scene.

The officer, who was walking to work at the 34th Precinct when he was attacked, was taken to a nearby hospital.

Officials say he was being treated for pain to right hand and elbow and swelling to the right side of his face.

It did not immediately appear the suspects knew their victim was an off-duty officer.
