NJ's support-the-troops charity broke

Friday, September 12, 2008

New Jersey's largest independent support-the-troops charity is broke.

American Recreational Military Services director Ronnie Micciulla says the group has less than $2,000 in the bank.

The group blames the poor economy and fatigue with the war on terrorism.

The state's National Guard just started serving its largest combat deployment since World War II.

The group's volunteers were hoping to make as many as five shipments of care packages to the more than 2,800 troops deployed.

But Micciulla says that would cost nearly $150,000.

The care packages include toiletries, nonperishable food and other items.
