NEW YORK (WABC) -- Two children are recovering Sunday after they were wounded in separate shootings.
New York City police try to find those responsible, but they believe both victims were hit by stray bullets.
"Everybody heard pop, pop, pop, and it sounded like it was blocks away," one of the victim's aunts, Theresa Lipford, said. "And then, the next thing you know, my niece is bleeding."
It was the best and worst of both worlds, with evidence of the celebration of a block party soiled by clear signs of violence. Police now stand on every corner of President Street, hoping someone will come forward with information about the shooting of 10-year-old Denia Kearse.
"She is one loving child," Lipford said. "To know her is to love her. She loves to dance, and she likes to be with her family. And we were just enjoying the day."Denia was with relatives at the party when shots rang out around 8 p.m.
"She heard the first shot go off, and she started running," Denia's uncle, LaCraig Grant, said. "The second one caught her."
The stray bullet tore across her chest, chipping her collar bone.
"She's like a little hero, because she's like, 'I'm all right, I'm all right,'" Lipford said. "I'm just saying, it's real stupid that all you young guys can't get it together, whoever did this."
It's the same question many people in Far Rockaway are asking, as police there look for evidence in an unrelated shooting that injured an 8-year-old boy. He is in critical condition after he was struck in the head by a stray bullet.
It is senseless violence that many say must end.
"If we don't play a role in ridding our streets of guns, no one is going to do it," State Senator Eric Adams said.
Relatives say Denia is resting comfortably at Kings County Hospital and is asking for one thing: A party when she returns home.
