Broadway to dim lights for Newman

Friday, October 03, 2008

Broadway will honor the life and career of Paul Newman by dimming theater marquees on tonight.

The Broadway League, the industry's trade association, says theaters have agreed to dim the lights at exactly 8 p.m. for one minute in Newman's memory.

The legendary actor died of cancer on Sept. 26 at 83 at his Westport home.

Newman was better known as a screen actor, but also starred on the stage.

It was during his 1953 debut in the original New York production of William Inge's "Picnic" that he met his future wife, Joanne Woodward.

In 2003, Newman received a Tony Award nomination for his performance as the stage manager in the Broadway production of Thornton Wilder's "Our Town."
