Meals on Wheels worker fatally shot

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

A Meals on Wheels worker was fatally shot while making a delivery in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn Monday.

Police say 55-year-old Imonil Aminov was shot in the lobby 341 Dumont Avenue just after 10:15 a.m. He apparently rang the bell to Apt. 1D moments before he was shot.

Aminov was shot in the chest, according to authorities. He was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"He loved his job," his daughter Susannah said. "He was brave. He wasn't afraid of anyone or anything. He had a lot of courage."

Aminov was a deliveryman for the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged, delivering food through the city's Department for the Aging Meals on Wheels program.

He had just delivered pasta and broccoli to 73-year-old Gertie Johnson, a resident of the building. He was headed to his second delivery at the time of his murder.

Police believe he was targeted for robbery, but they do not yet know by whom.

The gunman, described as a black male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, fled the scene.

"It is unthinkable that a person dedicated to providing to those in need, and serving so many people in distress could have his life taken away by those without regard or concern for human life," Aileen Gitelson, CEO of JASA, said.

Aminov's family is in anguish over this sudden loss.

"It's really hard. It's really hard on us," Susannah said.
