Building evacuated in Chinatown

Friday, November 14, 2008

Nearly two dozen people were forced from their homes by an emergency evacuation of a building in Manhattan.

The building is located at 81 Bowery Street in Chinatown.

Officials say the building was closed because it has 34 illegally converted units.

Each unit is supposed to be single occupancy, but investigators found three bunk beds in each room.

The red cross is now helping to relocate 23 people.
