More people turning to food stamps for help

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Given job layoffs in this tough economy more and more New Yorkers are turning to food stamps to help put food on the table.

Officials are expecting a record amount of applicants, many of whom, have never before applied.

More and more New Yorkers are turning to food stamps to help put food on the table.

More than 1.3 million people receive food stamps in NYC. One store manager tells Eyewitness News those customers are becoming increasingly diverse.

Many predict the number of people receiving food stamps will continue to grow because of future job cuts.

City officials believe the rise is a direct result of their efforts to streamline the process.

An estimated 500,000 New Yorkers who qualify for benefits aren't registered.
