Two men rescue woman in canal

Friday, December 12, 2008

Two Good Samaritans rescued a woman from her vehicle after she drove into a canal on Long Island Friday.

Jennie Cocco told police she was traveling on Concourse East in Brightwaters near Montauk Highway when her gas pedal became stuck. She lost control of her vehicle and drove into the canal at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Cocco, of Islip Terrace, was unable to free herself from the vehicle.

Two witnesses, Jacob Miller and James Digiovanna, saw that the vehicle was almost completely submerged in the canal.

They jumped into the water, rescued Cocco from the car and brought her to the edge of the canal. Police officer Joseph Bianco responded and assisted the two men in bringing Cocco safely to shore.

Cocco was transported to Southside Hospital, where she was treated for hypothermia. Miller and Digiovanna declined medical treatment.
