Suspect in police standoff surrenders

Friday, February 06, 2009

An elite police sergeant was injured when a despondent man opened fire from his house in the East Elmhurst section of Queens -- sparking a 10 hour standoff.

The sergeant, assigned to Emergency Services Unit Truck 9, reportedly sustained an ankle injury while responding to a dispute at the house on Humphrey Street just before 10:15 p.m. last night.

Police say as the elite ESU unit and other police officers responded, 41-year-old Arthur Anderson suddenly began firing gunshots through the windows.

One of the shots struck outside debris, knocking up a chunk that ricocheted the sergeant. He was struck in the ankle by the ricochet.

However, he was treated at the scene and continued commanding his officers through the standoff.

Eyewitness News is told a couple hours later, the man fired more shots inside the house.

Authorities closed streets and evacuated neighboring houses as they negotiated with the man, who was the only person inside the house, and fired another round of gunfire at around 3 a.m.

After 10 hours of negotiations, Anderson peacefully surrendered.

He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital for a psychological evaluation. Charges against him are pending.

According to reports, the man appeared depressed about the death of his mother.
