Wind fans the flames in Queens

Thursday, February 12, 2009

A dozen families are out of their homes after a destructive, wind-driven fire in Queens.

The fire broke out in one house on 96th Street in the Woodhaven section just before 12:45 Thursday afternoon.

Strong wind gusts fanned the flames as they quickly spread from one house to the next.

Within minutes, the fire reached five alarms.

Fortunately, all of the residents escaped without injury. None of the 170 firefighters were hurt.

Officials said at least 8 homes were burned and at least four others sustained damage.

No one was being allowed to return to those dozen houses on Thursday night.
