Fashion forward for plus sizes

Thursday, March 12, 2009

Women come in all shapes and sizes. And retailers are becoming more savvy to that.

If you're full-figured and you want to be fashion forward, there's no reason not to be. And stores and Web sites are making it easier. They know plus-size women will spend on clothes, and now they're finding more places to spend.

Extraordinary, in mint condition and in a generous size - that's exactly the kind of piece you'll find throughout the Brooklyn store Re/Dress, where the clientele is plus-size women and the clothes are gently worn.

There are no other stores like Deb Malkin's in the city. Plus-size women can shop for anything and everything from resale jeans to formal wear and even vintage.

OneStopPlus.com is a Web site with a similar-sized customers in mind. The clothes aren't gently worn, but new, and by American and European designers.

The site offers editorial advice. Customers can blog about looks. Even the shoes and jewelry are offered in larger sizes, allowing plus-size women to be as trendy as anyone else.

It launched three years ago, and within two years, it had doubled its traffic and revenue. It's not surprising when you consider the market.

"Sixty-two percent of America is size 12 and up," OneStopPlus' Nancy LeWinter said. "That's the majority of American women, and they're of every shape and size."

So whether it's new looks or looks from the 50s and 60s, there are more and more options for women to look and feel great.

Re/Dress is located at 109 Boerum Place, between Dean and Pacific streets, in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn. For more information, visit ReDressNYC.com.

OneStopPlus.com's corporate offices are located at 463 Seventh Avenue in Manhattan.
