Flu-like outbreak causes concern at NYC school

Saturday, April 25, 2009

A Queens school is coming under focus because of an outbreak of flu-like symptoms.

Seventy-five students were brought to the health office at the private St. Francis Preparatory School on Thursday complaining of headaches, upset stomachs and dizziness.

The Health Department has reached out to every student suffering from symptoms and told them to go to the hospital and get tested to determine if they have the flu, and what type of flu strain they have.

The first test results were expected back Saturday. If they're found to have a known human strain that would rule out swine flu. If results come back not human, the CDC would do further testing.

The school postponed an evening event and sanitizing the building over the weekend.

Meantime, the New York City Health Department has issued an alert regarding swine flu.

The department sent an alert to hospitals and medical professionals warning them about the swine outbreak in California, Texas and Mexico.

Officials stressed that there are no confirmed cases in the city, but they are implementing "enhanced citywide influenza surveillance" to identify any possible cases that may develop. ---
