MOUNT LAUREL (WABC) -- A 10-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike has killed five people and injured several others.
The accident happened at 1 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the turnpike just north of Exit 4 in Moorestown.
According to authorities, a tractor-trailer hit a Buick, causing the car to catch fire.
The car went into the center lane and was hit by a Jeep, containing three New York City men.
The five who were killed were in the Buick LeSabre. All five were in their 70s, but their names have not been released.Three of those in the car - a man, his wife, and sister-in-law - were from Kearney, New Jersey.
The other two were a man and wife from Passaic, New Jersey.
The three men in the Jeep were injured in the accident. They were taken to Cooper Hospital in Camden. One is critical. One is serious, but stable. The other was treated and released.
Southbound traffic was closed between exit 7A and 4, causing a 10-mile backup for those struck behind the wreck, as a well as a 5-mile backup northbound.
Charges are pending against the driver of the tractor-trailer.
