Pedestrians struck near NYC movie shoot

Wednesday, May 06, 2009

A chain reaction crash sent an unoccupied car careening into as many as eight people near a Midtown Manhattan movie shoot.

The 3:15 a.m. crash, on Seventh Avenue near West 53rd Street, was just blocks from the set of the Nicholas Cage movie "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."

Eyewitness News is told a driver attempting to avoid a taxi cab struck a parked vehicle -- sending it careening onto the sidewalk.

The unoccupied vehicle apparently hurtled onto the sidewalk, striking as many as eight people.

Officials say the victims, employees of a production company working on the movie, were taken to the hospital. None of their injuries were considered life threatening.

The driver of the initial vehicle, a medical student, said she was avoiding a swerving taxi cab when she struck the parked vehicle.

She was not injured.

It was the second vehicular mishap connected to the movie shoot this week.

On Monday, a Ferrari driven by a stuntman skidded out of control and crashed into a restaurant, injuring two pedestrians in its path.

The two were treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is a Walt Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films production, and is the biggest Disney movie ever to shoot in New York City.

The film is based on the classic Mickey Mouse sequence in Walt Disney's 1940 Fantasia, in which the famous rodent is nearly drowned when he dons the magic hat of his wizardly employer.

In this version, Cage plays the sorcerer, who recruits a reluctant college student.

It is due for release in summer 2010.
