NEW YORK (WABC) -- Many New Yorkers have money coming to them that they don't know about.
"This is fantastic!" said one fan.
Free money has a way of generating that kind of reaction.
"Who would have thought that at a Mets game you would find out you have money waiting for you to be claimed? A very good thing. It's gonna pay for dinner," Christina D'Amico said.
Apparently, the State Comptroller thought the Mets game would be a good place to have New Yorkers reunite with their cash. Armed with computers and a few banners, staffers from Tom DiNapoli's office set up shop at Citi Field. A few clicks inside the state's unclaimed funds database is all it takes to find out if you have money from a forgotten savings account or utility service deposit.
"I might. I have to investigate a little further," Marissa Fisher said.
For many people, that investigation will pay off. The state has 9.9 billion dollars in unclaimed funds, all of it sitting patiently in 23-million accounts.
"Most of the claims are for less than 100-dollars, about 52-percent. But we do have one account that is 1.7 million dollars for one person, said Robert Whalen of the State Comptrollers Office.
Perhaps that person is you. There's an easy way to find out. Just visit the State Comptroller's unclaimed funds web page where you can check to see if there's some cold hard cash waiting for you.
