NJ school says final exams hacked

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

School officials and police are trying to figure out how students at a New Jersey high school got access to final exams before they were given.

"I was so shocked to hear that children would do this. It's disappointing," said Ellie Puckhaber, a parent.

The breach has been the talk of Tenafly High School during these final days before summer break.

"I heard they stole the history exam," one student said.

"They may have gotten the science exam too," said another student.

The district says it's not sure exactly which tests were stolen or how.

A letter to parents reads teachers responded by "...quickly designing alternative and or new versions of exams which were known to be compromised."

It's a relief, to a certain degree, for many kids who studied for their tests.

"People were afraid we were going to have to take our tests all over again," Michael Cangro said.

The last day of school is Thursday, but the breach and theft investigation will continue.

The district said "...it has been able to identify a number of students responsible for planning and carrying out the plans..." to obtain the exams.

School officials suggested the school's computer system might have been hacked.

Exams at the Bergen County school began last week and were finished Tuesday.
