Wednesday, July 01, 2009

A fugitive was shot by a Suffolk County law enforcement officer during an attempted apprehension in the Cambria Heights section of Queens Wednesday.

Authorities say the man was shot at the intersection of 116th Avenue and Springfield Boulevard just before 10 a.m.

He was shot in the stomach and rushed to Jamaica Medical Center, where he was in stable condition.

The officer who fired the shots was believed to be a Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff. He was not injured.

The officer was part of a fugitive task force, comprised of Suffolk County Sheriff Deputies, NYPD officers and U.S. Marshals.

No NYPD officers were at the location at the time of the shooting. The NYPD officers were at the home of the fugitive's grandmother.

It was not immediately known why the fugitive was wanted.
