NEW YORK (WABC) -- Three NYC police officers hit by bullet fragment late Wednesday night when they tried to thwart an attack by a pit bull terrier in a public housing complex on the Upper East Side.
Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne told reporters the officers were struck with fragments from their own weapons when they opened fire on a pit bull that was allegedly unleashed on them by a tenant.

Around 10:30 p.m. at 1806 First Avenue, between 93rd and 94th Streets, six officers from the 19th Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting an assault in an apartment. When the officers knocked on the door, Browne said, a female tenant opened the door and allowed the pit bull to attack the officers. Browne, asked to be specific, said that the woman intended the officers to be attacked, and charges against her will be filed later today. She, too, suffered minor fragment injuries.
Three of the six officers fired weapons, the number of shots fired was not immediatey clear, said Browne. The dog was killed.
"The bullets fragmented and shattered," said Browne. "They were in the hallway, a very confined space."
Five civilians inside the apartment were questioned but not charged. No weapon was recovered.
Again, all of the injuries were described as minor.
