Mayor to lift hiring freeze

Monday, August 10, 2009

Mayor Bloomberg said he will lift the hiring freeze he instituted four days ago, following the state Senate's passage overnight of the city's sales tax hike.

As part of that freeze, the scheduled swearing in of the next class of NYPD officers was postponed. Bloomberg said he would reschedule the swearing in, but it is not clear when that could happen.

Bloomberg said he now expects the state Senate to renew mayoral control of schools as soon as today. He said the Senate is "overwhelmingly" in favor of his continued control of schools.

Additionally, Bloomberg discussed the Throgs Neck Bridge fire, but had nothing substantive to add. He used the opportunity to reiterate that people should take the subway.

He made the comments on his WOR-AM radio show.
