Young woman found dead in Queens

Monday, July 13, 2009

Police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was discovered in the bedroom of her apartment in Astoria.

Authorities say the woman was sexually assaulted.

Police say the body of 23-year-old Carmen Saldana was found by her mother after she returned from a weekend working on Long Island. The home is located in a building on 30th Avenue.

Family members say the victim was married when she was 18, but has since divorced.

The chain lock on the door had been busted, according to police.

Saldana, a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology, was reportedly home alone for the weekend.

Police say there were bruises all over the body.

The brutal nature of the crime has left residents stunned.

"It's devestating," one neighbor said. "It's a mother's nightmare, just brutal."
