NEW YORK (WABC) -- After weeks of public and private bickering, a deal has been reached over control of city schools and the mayor comes out a winner.
Mayoral control expired last month when the senate was locked in a power struggle.
Under this new deal, the education panel size will remain the same and the mayor will still control the panel.
"The agreement announced by the Senate Democratic Leadership today enables progress in our schools to continue," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "It preserves the accountability and authority necessary to ensure that the gains we've made - in math and reading scores, graduation rates and school safety - continue."
Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada says the centerpiece of the plan is parental involvement. They will participate in decision-making with superintendents and principals on transportation, school safety, nutrition and other issues."It will enhance areas that need improvement and further strengthen areas that have experienced success. This agreement, which creates a network of support for our children, will result in greater student achievement," said Espada.
The deal is expected to be voted on in august and in place by the beginning of the school.
