Swimmer missing off Rockaway Beach

  

ROCKAWAY BEACH (WABC) -- A large search was underway in the Atlantic Ocean off Rockaway Beach for a missing swimmer.

A man was reported in distress in the water off Riis Park just after 8:00 p.m.

The 21-year-old man was still missing late Monday night.

The Fire Department divers had difficulty with the rough surf during their search for the missing man.

The man, just a week away from his 22nd birthday, was visiting the beach with other family members and friends.

Some went into the water, but he never came out.

The search was called off late Monday night.
