Stabbed man crashes car, dies on SI

Thursday, August 06, 2009

A man was stabbed while getting into his car on Staten Island, and then drove a few blocks before crashing into a tree and dying.

Police have now arrested the man's common law wife. They say she was the one who stabbed him. But did she kill him, or did the accident?

The autopsy could play a huge role in the charges against the wife.

News of their neighbor's death came hard to some on Westervelt Street, who learned that the victim was stabbed at his home in New Brighton.

And then, investigators believe, he tried in vain to drive himself to the hospital, only to crash his car near a park several blocks away. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died.

Police have arrested the victim's common law wife, Yolanda McNeil and are charging her with assault and weapons possession. She could be facing more serious charges if the autopsy shows the victim died from the stab wounds.

Still the death of their neighbor is jarring to neighbors.

Dan, who lives a couple of doors away, didn't hear or see anything in the early morning hours, when police believe the victim was stabbed. He is now saddened and feels confused.

"We were just thinking about how well we know each other, how close our neighborhood is," he said. "Could we be closer? Should we know more about what's going on? It's hard to figure out."

Rotimi Adenegan still can't believe his neighbor met this tragic end, a man who has been a good neighbor in every sense.

"We talk together all the time," he said. "He greets people a lot. He helps people a lot. He'd do whatever he can."

The victim's identity has not been released.
