Recession delays car repairs

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The economic crisis has most people cutting back on spending. And for some people, that means putting off car repairs and maintenance, and that decision may be putting other people on the road in danger.

At Kings County Carburetor and Ignition in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, Peter Giordano has to educate a lot of his customers as many of them are cutting back on needed repairs. He says the economy has drivers reorganizing their priorities and according to the National Car Care Council says an analysis of vehicles during two separate months in 2008 showed 80 percent of them needed parts replaced, services performed or fluids changed.

Customers like Ed Phillips was selling real estate until the economy took a dive. Now he's writing a book and seeing if he needs new brakes, brakes that would be hard to afford while he's not getting a paycheck. But Ed knows something Peter truly believes in--fix what needs to be fixed.
