FAIRFIELD (WABC) -- A bar in Fairfield was found to have more than 100 underage drinkers during a sweep by police Tuesday.
Authorities say a large young crowd began arriving at Bravo around 9:45 p.m. Undercover Liquor Control officers entered the bar just after 10 p.m. and reportedly found a large number of underage drinkers.
Detectives and officers then entered and found more than 100 patrons had fake Ids that they used to enter the bar. Their real identities were obtained and they were eventually released without being charged.
Authorities say six people who were seen drinking or who admitted drinking were issued infractions for possession of alcohol by a minor.
Police say recent incidents of violence on college campuses played a role in the sweep. They say addressing underage drinking is a goal toward helping curb violence.Fairfield University, where some of the underage drinkers attend school, released the following statement:
"Fairfield University has been in communication with local law enforcement and learned that a number of students both from Fairfield University and other institutions were arrested late last evening on allegations of underage drinking and/or possession of false identification at a local restaurant and bar known as Bravo's. Fairfield University policy strictly prohibits underage drinking and use of false identification, and has worked closely with local and state law enforcement officials to address such behaviors. Students found to have violated University policy will have their cases processed through the student code of conduct.
"This is of course troubling news, but it is something that college and university campuses across the country deal with. Although these matters occurred off campus, Fairfield University takes seriously its role in addressing this behavior both from a disciplinary as well as education standpoint."
