Longtime letter carrier calls it a day

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

He's been on the job for 39 years, but a New Jersey postal worker is saying goodbye. Now, he'll keep busy taking care of his grandchildren.

John Thomas was honored at a ceremony attended by officials and co-workers in Elizabeth, where he spent most of his career as a letter carrier.

He's received many awards, including for perfect attendance and outstanding service.

With tears in his eyes, Thomas said he was leaving one of the greatest families in the world.

Thomas, who was also in the army for 20 years and a reservist for 14 more, is retiring after 57 years of federal employment.

Better known as J.T., Thomas started delivering mail in the Elizabethport section of Elizabeth in 1975 and on his current route since 1980.

The die-hard Yankee fan has two daughters, eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He says the saddest day of his life was in 2005 when his wife of 54 years, Valdina, died.

"Did it all, seen it all," Thomas said. "Just gonna relax, enjoy and spoil the great grandchildren."
