BRONX (WABC) -- Police say a pedestrian was fatally struck by a car in the Bronx, and the driver, an off duty NYPD Detective was taken into custody.
Police say the incident happened at West 232nd-street and Kingsbridge Avenue. The victim was identified as 67-year-old Drane Mikac.
The driver, who was allegedly drunk was an off-duty NYPD Detective, identified by police as 42-year-old Kevin Spellman. Spellman has been with the NYPD for 20 years.
The suspect is charged with Vehicular Manslaughter, Criminal Negligent Homicide and DWI.
The victim was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Another person may have been treated for Lincoln Hospital with back pain.
The detective was a member of the fugitive task force assigned in the Bronx.
He is member of a team consisting of several agencies one of which is the United Sates Marshals services.
Officals tell Eyewitness News, the car he was driving was a company car leased by the US Marshals services.
NYPD officials obtained a search warrant for the detective's blood which is being analyzed.
The impact of the crash was so violent it shattered a windshield.
Neighbors say the intersection is busy and dangerous.
"There are two schools and there's a crossing for children and we have a lot of senior citizens...and this is not the first incident of speed and driving in this area," said Jacqueline Mateo.
