Trick-or-treaters struck in deadly accident

NUTLEY, N.J. (WABC) -- One child was killed, another was critically injured after being hit by an SUV while trick-or-treating.

The accident happened on Washington Avenue in Nutley just after 8:00 p.m.

The children were crossing the street with other kids and adults in Halloween costumes when they were hit by the vehicle.

A 9-year-old girl died at the scene. A 3-year-old boy was taken to UMDNJ.

The driver, a 44-year-old man, stayed at the scene. He was being treated at a local hospital for trauma.

No names were immediately released.
