Corrections officer fatally strikes pedestrian

Tuesday, November 03, 2009

A corrections officer driving with a suspended license is facing charges after allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian in Brooklyn Tuesday morning.

Damon Padmore began his day like so many other times, but in a matter of minutes, it spiraled out of control.

Now, he must wait and see where the police investigation goes.

Joyce Padmore was just beginning her day. She is not in good health and was devastated to hear that her son David was linked to the deadly car accident.

The 38-year-old left his mother's Brooklyn apartment building at around 5 a.m. Tuesday, headed north to Sing Sing in his black jeep.

He works for the prison as a corrections officer. Twenty minutes into his commute, authorities say he hit a woman at the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and St. Marks Place.

The damage to his SUV is extensive in the area of his front left headlight and bumper.

The 38-year-old victim, identified as Dorothea Wallace, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, but died there.

Padmore was brought to the 77th Precinct in Brooklyn. Police say he is a 12-year veteran with the state Corrections Department.

Padamore is charged with driving with a suspended license. Police say alcohol was not involved.

His mother said her son live in Ossining, but spends most of his time in Brooklyn caring for her.

"He's very careful," she said. "That is my shining star, that is my shining star."

A spokesman with state Corrections Department said the agency will conduct a full investigation into the crash.
