Flames engulf Con Ed substation

YONKERS (WABC) -- A spectacular fire burned through a Con Edison substation for hours, causing officials to worry about possible air contamination.

Newscopter-7 was live over the scene.

The fire reportedly broke out at the Dunwoodie substation on Kingston Avenue just after 5:30 a.m.

Heavy flames shot out the power equipment, feeding off oil in a 345,000 volt transformer.

Local streets in the area were closed for fire activity.

Officials say the oil that burned was non-PCB based, but as a precaution, Yonkers police asked nearby residents to keep windows and doors shut and intake vents off.
