NEW YORK (WABC) -- A top transit executive resigned Wednesday morning, stepping aside so the new head of the MTA can put his own people in place.
Transit President Howard Roberts resigned after more than two years in charge of the subways and buses for the MTA.
The move had been expected since Jay Walder, a veteran of the London transit system, was named head of the troubled MTA.
Roberts was hired by his friend, former MTA CEO Eliot Sander. Sander, himself appointed by former Gov. Spitzer, was forced out by Gov. Paterson in May.
Walder is expected to install his own person to head the Transit Authority, and this resignation could be the start of executive house cleaning.
Roberts recently introduced bosses for each subway line, and was key in negotiating the last Transit Workers Union contract.
But complaints remained from straphangers about chronically late trains and weekend subway repairs.
